Queen’s University Dental School Passes Inspection

A General Dental Council report has permitted Queen’s University Belfast’s School of Dentistry to remain open, it has been confirmed.

The report confirms that the school will retain its GDC membership. However, issues have been flagged up and the body is calling for changes to be made immediately to bring the school up to scratch. Investigators raised a series of concerns in previous inspections, which prompted the investigation and the subsequent release of the report.

Although the GDC gives the school the green light, there is still a great deal of room for improvement and chiefs at the school have been advised to act quickly to address issues including staffing levels.

In October 2011, a GDC inspection report slammed the school, raising concerns over public safety and highlighting a lack of communication between staff and students and poor standards of teaching. At the time, more than one hundred patients who had been treated at the clinic were called back by the GDC after it was revealed that their files had not been reviewed in the appropriate manner. This included four patients with cancer, three of whom died as a result of oral cancer.

In contrast to the report from 2011, the 2015 report is much more positive and it guarantees the status of the school in the immediate future. The report confirms that significant improvements have been made in the quality of teaching and student morale. However, it also underlines the need for further improvement, especially in the recruitment of new members of staff.
