A dental campaign, which was launched by Bradford’s Telegraph & Argus newspaper, has attracted plaudits from a public health minister.

Steve Brine, public health minister, described the ‘Stop the Rot’ campaign as “brilliant” during a meeting with representatives of the paper and local MP, Judith Cummins. Stop the Rot was launched on the back of several years of campaigning for better local dental services in Bradford, an area where standards of oral health are among the worst in the country. Statistics from Public Health England revealed that around 40 percent of 5-year-old children in the city suffered from tooth decay in 2016/2017.

Mr Brine praised the campaign for bringing oral health to the public’s attention, as well as that of ministers, and said that it was particularly useful to highlight the importance of prevention, as the vast majority of cases of childhood decay could be prevented.

After the Prime Minister confirmed a funding boost worth £20 billion for the NHS, local MP Judith Cummins is keen to ensure that Bradford benefits. Ms Cummins has raised the issue of poor access to NHS dental care in the city in the House of Commons several times over the course of the last few years.
