A group of private dentists has come together to launch a new urgent dental centre in York.

Members of staff from fourteen private practices across the city have joined forces to open the emergency hub, which is located at Woodthorpe Dental Centre. The clinic is offering urgent dental care at a fee of £80 to cover PPE costs.

Principal dentist at Bishopthorpe, Copmanthorpe and Woodthorpe Dental Centres, Kris Leeson, explained that the service was designed to help patients who need urgent treatment while local practices are closed. Patients will be assessed over the telephone and patients who need assistance will be referred to the centre. Patients should call their regular dentist to undergo a consultation to see if an appointment is required. The clinic is treating those with trauma, severe swelling and pain and symptoms of dental infection.

To maximise safety and lower the risk of Covid-19 infection, the centre is seeing one patient at a time and all dentists are using full PPE, including gowns, visors, masks and gloves.

Mr Leeson said that the lockdown had been a “frustrating” time for dentists, with many feeling helpless due to being unable to provide face-to-face treatment. The urgent clinic will help those who are in need of emergency dental care. The teams from the fourteen practices are also offering advice over the phone and online and they are able to prescribe medications, including analgesics and antibiotics.
