Sara Holmes MBE, head of the Dental Academy at the University of Portsmouth, has received a prestigious national award.

Holmes has been awarded a National Teaching Fellowship by the Higher Education Academy in recognition of excellence in teaching and support for higher education students.

All winners of the Fellowship award are given £10,000 towards professional development.

Sara Holmes was chosen from more than 180 nominees and is one of only fifty-five lecturers and learning support staff in the country to receive the award. Sara was nominated thanks to her dedication, determination and innovative approach to learning. She was instrumental in the development of the University of Portsmouth’s Dental Academy and is a highly respected member of the staff team.

Sara said that receiving the award was a “huge honour” and thanked all her colleagues, stating that all her success would not have been possible without their help and support. Sara originally trained as a dental nurse and has a passion for dentistry, as well as education.

Sara will be presented with her award at a ceremony in October.
