Poor Oral Health is Damaging the Economy

Poor oral health is damaging the economy as a result of workers taking time off due to dental problems.

According to figures, more than 2 million people in the UK have taken time off as a result of dental pain over the course of the last two years.

Most dental problems are preventable, but this has not stopped around seven percent of the UK’s workforce calling in sick with oral health conditions over the last five years.

The survey findings were published by dental charity, the British Dental Health Foundation as part of its National Smile Month campaign, which has recently drawn to a close.

Dr Nigel Carter, chief executive of the British Dental Health Foundation, said that the findings of the study were not surprising, as other surveys have revealed that a quarter of adults have not visited a dentist within the last two years and a similar proportion admitted to only brushing their teeth once a day.

National Smile Month is an annual campaign, which is designed to promote oral health and encourage people to adopt good oral hygiene habits. This year’s campaign ran from May 20th to June 20th.
