A New Albany police officer has shot a suspect following an incident at a dental office.

Police were called to the ImmediaDent dental practice at 1.30pm on Sunday after members of staff called for assistance with handling a man who was allegedly trying to commit prescription fraud.

According to police Chief, Todd Bailey, an officer approached the suspect to try and diffuse the question and find out what was going on; however, the suspect quickly pulled a knife out. The officer tried to use a taser but it did not have the desired effect and he was forced to use a gun; the officer shot the suspect and paramedics took him to the University Hospital in Louisville. The suspect is believed to have undergone surgery, following the shooting but no further details of his condition have been released. Bailey said that the officer feared for his safety and was forced to shoot the suspect, as he was armed with a knife.

Sources told Fox 41 News that the suspect was a patient at the ImmediaDent practice and had been at the surgery on Saturday.

Helen Green, who works at the shop next door to the dental office, said she could not believe what had happened; she said that the local community was in shock after the incident.

Police Chief Bailey said that initial investigations had revealed that the police officer had followed protocol and was forced to shoot after the suspect pulled out a knife and refused to cooperate with police. Further details about the case will be revealed in the near future and more investigations will follow. The names of the police officer and the suspect have not been revealed. The dental office was closed yesterday nut is expected to reopen today.
