Police are appealing for witnesses after thieves broke into the dental departments of two hospitals last night.

Hawick Community Hospital was broken into at around 02:10 and later the Borders General Hospital was also broken into. Police have revealed that canisters of Nitrous Oxide, commonly known as laughing gas, were stolen.

A member of staff working at Hawick Hospital heard a disturbance in the early hours of the morning and saw three men wearing hooded tops running away from the hospital.

A spokesman for Lothian and Borders Police said that the gas is used for medical purposes and could be harmful if used in an irresponsible manner. He also urged anyone who saw anything suspicious or caught sight of the three men around the hospitals to contact the police. Police have also urged the driver of a Ford Focus, which was seen around the area at the time of the incident to come forward.
