Professor Liz Kay has been appointed as a member of the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence’s (NICE) committee on oral health promotion in care homes and hospitals, it has been confirmed.

The dean of Plymouth University’s Peninsula School will use her skills and experience to input decision-making regarding the provision of dental care in hospitals and care homes across the country. The aim of the committee is to identify existing flaws in the system and come up with solutions to ensure that every person in care has access to the treatment they need.

Speaking of her appointment, Professor Kay said she was honoured and added that she was excited about the new challenge and quest to improve dental services in care homes and hospitals. Professor Kay was involved in a development study that was used to identify measures to improve oral health standards in care homes. The ‘Oral Health for Adults in Care Homes’ guide aims to educate those who provide care for patients in nursing and residential homes with the knowledge and skills to promote good oral health.

Professor Kay’s new role will involve a variety of tasks, including identifying priority areas for improvement, looking at existing resources and how they are employed and reviewing feedback provided by stakeholders and participating groups from the development project. Professor Kay will also be working alongside bodies and committees focused on other areas of care for the elderly and injured, including the Clinical Commissioning Group.
