A pair of dental experts from Plymouth’s Peninsula Dental Social Enterprise have been invited to speak at a conference in the US after impressing with their work on special care dentistry.

Dr Robert Whitton and Wendy Smith will attend a conference in North Carolina hosted by the Special Care Dentistry Association (SCDA). The duo will be presenting their findings based on a ground-breaking study based on the dental needs of patients from vulnerable groups in Plymouth. The SCDA is an international association, which aims to promote oral healthcare for patients with additional needs.

Robert and Wendy will be presenting the findings of their study and taking questions from the floor, which will be filled with some of the world’s leading dental professionals. This is a prestigious event, which attracts dental professionals who specialise in special care dentistry from all corners of the globe.

Dr Whitton said that it was a great honour to be asked to speak at the event, and he said the team was “delighted” to be involved. The study puts the spotlight on the complex oral health needs of adults from vulnerable groups of society, and also encourages dental professionals to take “psycho-social” factors into consideration when treating patients with special needs. The duo is hoping that he findings of the study in Plymouth will encourage further study in other areas of the UK and further afield.

This won’t be the first time the dental experts have visited the US for work. Just last year, they were invited to present at the International Association of Disability and Oral Health Congress in Chicago.
