A dental charity based in Plymouth hosted a special evening to showcase the work of volunteers on a recent trip to Tanzania.

SmileStar, which was founded by Dr Mitesh Badian, welcomed around 50 dentists, dental nurses and representatives from Plymouth dental clinics to the event. The SmileStar charity night took place at the Plymouth Dental Centre of Excellence.

Dr Badian and Leila Matthews, dental nurse, hosted the evening and shared photographs of their recent trip to Tanzania, a country, which has a severe shortage of dental professionals and very poor standards of oral health. Dr Badian and Ms Matthews were part of a team of six and they treated hundreds of people during their two week stay. On the first day, numbers were relatively small, but work of the clinics quickly spread and by the third day, there were more than one hundred people waiting in line.

The charity was founded in 2007 with the aim of providing dental care for people in developing countries. The most recent mission was to Tanzania and a team of volunteers is currently preparing to visit Kenya in May.

Practice manager, Debbie Hutchinson, explained that all the work done by the charity is voluntary. The charity evening was an opportunity for more people to get involved, to learn more about the work of SmileStar and to find out about future projects.
