Plymouth Dental Ambassadors Celebrate Their New Roles

Sample News Big

Six people are celebrating their new roles after becoming dental ambassadors. The group of six adults with learning disabilities completed a six week training programme to enable them to pass on their knowledge and skills to raise awareness of the importance of dental health among their peers.

The group of six spent time with dental experts from the community engagement team as part of the Peninsula Dental Social Enterprise. The new ambassadors are the first to have completed the training programme, which is designed specifically for adults with learning disabilities.

As part of their training, the six candidates took part in interactive activities, created story boards and learned how to hone practical skills, such as brushing and flossing. Now, they will be able to share their newly-gained knowledge with friends and peers to encourage them to enjoy better standards of oral health. The group also visited the Dental Education Facility in Devonport.

Jill Singh, from Plymouth People First, said that peer to peer programmes are very effective and this new dental ambassador scheme has been a great success. The group really took the training on board and enjoyed the activities and the course has already had a really positive impact on their oral health. Robert Witton, from the Peninsula Dental Social Enterprise, described the programme as “inspiring”.

Each new dental ambassador was presented with a certificate and an oral health pack.
