Plans submitted to create new NHS dental surgery in Blackheath

Plans to change the use of a vacant shop into a brand new NHS dental surgery in Blackheath have been submitted to the council. The Bhandal Group is planning to create a new practice in the area in line with increased demand for NHS dental places.

The group already has a number of practices in the West Midlands and the latest application relates to the former Hallmark Cards shop on the High Street. The shop has been empty for a year and the proposal states that opening a new dental surgery would have a positive impact on local people. In recent years, there has been an increase in demand for NHS dental services and Dr Bhandal’s Birmingham Road surgery is currently oversubscribed.

A spokesman for Sandwell Council stated that there is a “need” for more NHS dental services in the area due to a “growing patient list.” The proposal outlines the creation of an annexe associated with the Birmingham Road practice, which would enable Dr Bhandal to accept new NHS patients.

If plans are approved, the premises will be converted into a surgery and a 2-storey extension will be added at the back. There is already a car park at the rear of the building, but the plans outline proposals for an extra five private spaces.
