Planning application submitted to open a new dental practice in Port Talbot

An application to create a new dental surgery in Port Talbot has been submitted to planning officers.

Aegon Asset Management has sent in plans to open a new practice at Baglan Bay Retail Park on Christchurch Road. The company has already identified a dental provider to run the clinic and would offer a lease agreement if the proposals are given the go-ahead by planning officers at Neath Port Talbot Council.

The proposed development would open in retail unit 3 at the industrial park, which is currently occupied by Dreams furniture store. The site is over 460 square metres and would provide an excellent location for a dental clinic, according to the application submitted by Aegon Asset Management.

A new dental practice could have a significant impact in the local community, with access to services an issue for many patients. Across Wales, people are struggling to get appointments and some are having to choose between going private or joining waiting lists for NHS treatment. With backlogs growing due to lockdowns and limited patient numbers, new clinics could help to ease pressure on existing dental services and enable more patients to see a dentist in their local area.

The application states that the new surgery would not have a negative impact on surrounding businesses or increase traffic levels significantly.

Research published by the British Dental Association in Wales in 2019 suggested that new NHS places for patients in Wales were at an “all-time low.”
