A church group based in Plaistow hosted a community event offering free medical and dental checks recently. The London Ghana Seventh-Day Adventist Church provided free dental checks and health tests as well as food and refreshments as part of the annual community health expo.

The event, which is now in its fifth year, was held at Plaistow Park on Chadwin Road. As well as offering local people the chance to see a dentist for free and have their blood pressure, blood glucose levels and cholesterol checked, the event also aimed to encourage local families to let loose and have fun. There was a bouncy castle and both adults and children were invited to take part in all kinds of fun activities like music competitions. The tug of war was a popular attraction, as teams flexed their muscles in an attempt to win the title.

Japheth O-Amankwah, event coordinator, said that it’s always hugely rewarding to organise the community expo and see what a positive difference it makes to local families. The event is an opportunity to socialise and meet new friends and catch up with old ones as well as taking advantage of basic health checks, which are available free of charge.

Visitors were also treated to healthy snacks and drinks on the day.

The church also runs a weekly food bank, providing families who are struggling to put meals on the table with food packages.
