Patients urged to take advantage of free oral cancer checks in Binley Woods

Patients in Binley Woods are being encouraged to take advantage of free oral cancer checks in November to support Mouth Cancer Action Month.

Binley Woods Dentistry will be offering free check-ups during the weeks ahead to raise awareness of mouth cancer and encourage as many people as possible to get checked out. Oral cancer screening is painless and quick, and it forms part of routine health checks, which is one of the many reasons patients are urged to see their dentist on a regular basis. Dentist, Neelam King, explained that the practice is eager to get people talking about mouth cancer, as public awareness is very poor. Despite the fact that this form of cancer kills more people in the UK than cervical and testicular cancer combined, the majority of patients are not aware of the symptoms.

As November is Mouth Cancer Action Month, practices all over the country will be offering free screening and taking part in activities. Through the clinic’s oral cancer initiative, the team is hoping to educate patients about the causes, risk factors and warning signs and encourage local people to get behind the annual campaign run by the Oral Health Foundation and the Mouth Cancer Foundation.

To qualify for a free oral cancer check, local residents are invited to call and register with the practice. A 15-minute check will then be provided at a time that is convenient to them during November. The screening check involves a close inspection of the soft tissue, including the tongue, lips, gums and cheeks.
