A survey has revealed that the majority of parents in the USA support back to school dental examinations for children.

The Oral Health America survey found that 63 percent of parents believe it is important to take their children for a routine check-up before the start of the new academic year. The results also showed that 89 percent of parents also believed that regular visits to the dentist were an important part of their children’s healthcare.

The survey was conducted as part of the Fall for Smiles campaign, which was launched to try and promote good oral health and connect parents and families to providers in their local area.

In some states children are required to attend a routine examination before they go back to school; however, this is not the case in all states and some children go for years without having a check-up and end up with extensive oral health problems. Currently, millions of families are struggling to afford dental care and are relying on free events and clinics, which target low income families; however, the demand far outweighs the supply and only a very small proportion of those in need can actually be helped.

The results of the study show that the majority of parents are conscious of oral health and consider it an important part of their children’s overall health, which will come as encouraging news for dentists across America.
