Parents Encouraged To Learn Dental First Aid

A new report has encouraged parents to learn basic dental first aid so that they are able to treat children before they see a dentist.

According to the report from the American Academy of Pediatrics, it’s important for parents to be able to react to emergency situations and help their child with dental trauma, as there may be a wait to see a dentist and often, the period of time between an accident and treatment can be crucial.

Guidelines released by the academy inform and educate parents how to deal with traumatic dental situations. Lead author, Martha Ann Keels, said that the success of treatment is often dependent on the time lapsed after the accident and it is therefore hugely beneficial for parents to be able to administer first aid before the child sees a dentist in cases where the child does not have additional injuries.

The report also contains guidelines for family doctors to enable them to treat minor dental cases.

The report recommends seeing a dentist, rather than replacing dental visits with first aid measures, but highlights the benefits of parents being aware of how to treat minor dental issues.
