Dental experts are telling parents to keep a close eye on their children’s oral health as they return back to school.
The London Free Press reported that parents should brush up on their ABCs as Awareness, Brushing and Check-ups are the foundations of good oral hygiene for children.
This news comes after a survey suggested that only four out of 10 parents recognize that cavities in baby teeth can affect their children’s adult teeth.
“Dentistry is all about prevention and the earlier kids can begin to take responsibility for their oral health the better,” said: Dr. Friedlander, Canadian Dental Association president.
Kids need their baby teeth to be in top condition in order to eat correctly and to help their speech develop. If a child losses its baby teeth prematurely the adult teeth may grow improperly and the child’s mouth maybe become crowded.
The roots that hold a child’s first set of teeth help guide adult teeth when they begin to emerge. If baby teeth are damaged by cavities it can leave adult teeth at risk.
Poor oral health can seriously affect a kid’s life in other ways too. It can stop children eating, sleeping, and concentrating at school. Experts recommend that parents should get their child examined by a dentist within six months of the emergence of the child’s first tooth.
Parents should also be encouraging kids’ to have a well balanced diet as this affects their oral health too.
