The UK’s most well known oral health campaign is set to return with a bang in 2016, the Oral Health Foundation has confirmed.

National Smile Month, an annual campaign run by the foundation (previously known as the British Dental Health Foundation), will return on 16th May and run until the 16th June. The campaign will be supported by dental practices, businesses and dental organisations across the country.

This year’s event is particularly special, as it marks the 40th anniversary of the campaign.

The aim of National Smile Month is to get people talking about oral health. Educational materials and resources will be handed out at practices across the UK and events will be taking place throughout the month. The organisers are hoping to bring oral health education to everyone and encourage people to think about their own dental health and to take steps to rectify issues and prevent oral health problems in the future.

The Oral Health Foundation is keen to draw attention to three key guidelines this year: brush your teeth twice a day using fluoride toothpaste, visit your dentist frequently for routine check-ups and reduce your consumption of sugary foods and drinks.

Dr Nigel Carter OBE, chief executive of the foundation, encouraged everyone to get on board and support this year’s landmark campaign. The foundation is keen to reach out to as many people as possible and build on successes in the past.
