Older people keeping teeth for longer

Sample News Big

Research has revealed that older people are keeping their original set of teeth for longer than ever before.

The study, which was carried out by The Pennsylvania Dental Association, found that the percentage of Americans aged over 65 who had lost all their teeth fell to 26 percent in 2007; this was a 1.6 percent decrease since 2004.

Experts say the improved lifespan of natural teeth is down to improvements in oral hygiene habits and oral hygiene products, advances in dental care and better dental technology.

Dentists are encouraged by the results of the study and are urging people to continue to look after their teeth and gums. In order to keep the mouth clean and healthy, it is important to brush the teeth twice a day and use floss and mouthwash on a daily basis. In addition to a good daily oral hygiene routine, it is essential to visit the dentist at least once a year.

As people age, they may become more susceptible to oral health problems, including bone loss, decay and gum conditions. Dentists encourage patients who experience these problems to visit them regularly so that they can treat the problem and stop it from getting any worse. Patients with dentures are also encouraged to visit their dentist; regular check-ups will ensure the dentures fit properly and prevent conditions arising from this problem. Loose dentures can cause irritation and inflammation in the gum tissue, which can affect the remaining teeth and cause discomfort.
