Nursing home patients to get free dentistry

A new programme has been launched to help residents at the nursing residence for Georgia War Veterans; the new scheme will involve monthly visits from students from the Medical College of Georgia, who will assist the patients with their oral hygiene and offer them basic dental services free of charge.

The Georgia War Veterans Nursing Home currently houses around 200 patients, most of whom have problems maintaining high standards of oral hygiene because they have restricted movement and a reduced level of manual dexterity and hand to eye coordination; consequently, some of them have dental health issues and most find it difficult to keep their teeth or dentures clean.

The Dentists for Della affair, which has been named after Dr Victor Della-Giustina, a former member of the School of Dentistry and occupant of the Georgia War Veterans Nursing residence, will run every month and will involve around twenty dental students. During the event, students will help to clean patient’s teeth and dentures thoroughly and carry out examinations of their head, neck and mouth.

The Dentists for Della affairs are backed by funding from the Mary Allen Lindsey Brannan Foundation and are subsidised by the MCG department of the American Student Dental Association.
