Sample News Big

A Northampton dental practice is hosting a mouth cancer awareness event to educate people about mouth cancer and encourage them to undergo regular screening.

The Duston Dental Practice will be running a drop-in session on Wednesday 28th September and offering free oral cancer screening.

The practice, which is located in Main Road in Duston, will be open as usual and patients are advised to contact reception if they wish to find more about the oral cancer awareness event. Screening will be provided by Dr Samuel Elwick.

Mouth cancer has become more prevalent in the last 10 years, with the number of cases in the UK almost doubling; however, many people are still unaware of the causes and symptoms of mouth cancer and as a result, most cases are not detected until the disease has reached an advanced stage and is more difficult to treat.

Dentists across the UK are eager to raise the profile of mouth cancer so that people are aware of the risk factors and also the signs they should be looking out for, which include red or white patches in the mouth and throat, abnormal lumps or swelling in the mouth or throat and sores and mouth ulcers that take a long time to heal. Early detection through screening and regular dental appointments can help to improve the chance of survival by up to 90 per cent.
