North Carolina students teach children how to look after their teeth

A group of North Carolina high school students have been taking time out to educate young children about the importance of looking after their teeth and gums.

The 16 year old students, who are following a dental sciences programme at school, have been visiting 3 and 4 year olds and teaching them about the importance of good oral hygiene, healthy eating and visiting their dentist. During the sessions, children were invited to attend different stations, where students showed them how to brush their teeth, talked to them about diet and healthy eating and educated them about the dangers of poor oral health.

The programme was designed by the high school students; they wanted to use their knowledge and tools to help others. Teaching children about good oral health from an early age will encourage them to get involved in oral hygiene and adopt positive habits which will stay with them for life; not only will this mean they enjoy good oral health, but it also gives them valuable knowledge that they can pass on to other people.

The high school dental science students are planning to present their programme at a national event run by Health Occupations Students of America.
