‘No stigma’ around adult orthodontics

As the quest for the perfect smile continues, people in the UK are dedicating more time and more money to cosmetic dentistry, it has been reported.

The Guardian states that Brits are now spending £360 million a year on the industry and that as people desire straight teeth, orthodontics is collecting a hefty proportion.

Les Joffe, secretary of the British Society of Orthodontists, told the newspaper that over the last decade, he has seen around 50 per cent increase in demand for orthodontics, explaining that the stigma surrounding braces has largely disappeared.

The publication cites various adults who have sought orthodontic treatment in the later stages of their life, all claiming that braces are no longer a strictly child-dominated treatment.

Mike Clough, a 35-year-old from the Isle of Man, stated: “At the start I was really self-conscious but now I’m relaxed about it.

“I’m actually happier smiling in braces than I was without them, because at least I’m doing something about my teeth.”
