No New Dental Colleges For India

The Dental Council of India has confirmed that no new dental colleges will open in the country, due to high ratios of dentists to patients.

Dr Dibyendu Mazumdar, president of the DCI, said that it was possible for new colleges to be sanctioned in the North East, where there are currently no private colleges; however, no more private colleges will be opening in other regions of the country.

Dr Mazumdar was responding to an open letter written by Dr M Raveendranath, state president of the Indian Dental Association, which claimed that there were too many private colleges, which meant that ratios were higher than required and dentists were struggling to find work. In the state of Kerala, there are already 21 private dentistry colleges.

Dr Ravendreeth encouraged the DCI to take action after it was revealed that many dentists do not have enough work because there are so many dentists practising in some areas of the country. It is particularly difficult for newly qualified dentists to find work. He added that the current ratio in Kerala is “unrealistic” at 1 dentist to 3,300 patients and this is set to become even more “scewed” as 1,500 dentists are qualifying in Kerala every year.
