The National Health Service is set to lead the way with innovative new methods of using IT. Health Minister, Jeremy Hunt, has announced changes and moderations to include new information technology and a pilot scheme is currently underway to revolutionise the current dental contract.

Officials from the NHS claim that dentistry will pave the way for innovations in the NHS, which will set trends across the world. Mr Hunt said that Britain will become the “most interesting country in the world when it comes to health technology.”

Mr Hunt went on to outline a number of new measures, which will transform the way the dental care system works in theUK. Dentists and practice members will use information technology on an increasingly regular basis, to store records and to create efficient and effective personalised treatment plans. New technology will also be brought in to ensure that dentists working for the NHS are paid accurately and fairly, in line with changes to the system that are made in the new dental contract. Pilot schemes are currently underway across the UK to find a more effective and fair payment system for dentists.

Mr Hunt also stated that new information technology systems would be introduced in tandem with the new dental contract. Practices involved in the pilot schemes will use chair-side IT systems to allow dentists to input data quickly and conveniently.

An NHS official said that IT will have a greater presence when the new dental contract comes into play and this will lead to improvements for dentists and patients.
