NHS 24 is promoting emergency dental services throughout the country as part of National Smile Month. The annual campaign, which is due to kick off today (16th May) is organised by the Oral Health Foundation.

The round-the-clock emergency dental care service is using the campaign to raise awareness of itself, as it’s not as well-known as other health services. As part of National Smile Month, representatives are trying to get the word out that patients can access NHS dental care at any time of day.

National Smile Month celebrates its 40th anniversary this year and the aim is to promote key messages to help people take better care of their teeth and gums. The campaign focuses on encouraging people to brush twice a day using fluoride toothpaste, see their dentist for regular check-ups and limit their intake of sugar.

Senior dental nurse Romy Slater said that people may be unaware that they can access NHS care if they need emergency help for dental issues. There are many reasons why you may need urgent dental care, from accidents and falls to sudden toothache caused by dental abscesses and it’s important that people know what to do if they need emergency treatment.

National Smile Month will run until June 16th. Look out for events in your local area over the coming weeks. Thousands of dental practices up and down the country will be taking part in activities as part of the campaign.
