NHS medical and dental staff facing the axe

A survey carried out by the False Economy website, which is funded by unions, has revealed that 50,000 jobs in the NHS will be lost.

Cuts are being made across the country, as local NHS trusts strive to reduce their deficit and decrease spending. The website provides the most recent account of what is going on in England and the rest of the UK; in England alone, 24,000 hospital jobs will be lost, as well as 10,000 jobs in primary care and 6,000 jobs in mental health trusts.

Administration, nursing and dental jobs are all at risk and many doctors are also facing an uncertain future. Hospital trusts in East Lancashire, North Staffordshire and the Wirral are amongst the worst-affected, with thousands of jobs set to be lost.

News of the cuts will be greeted with public anger and concern and many people will feel betrayed by the Conservative government’s election pledge to protect frontline NHS services. Trade union staff, representatives from medical organisations and opposition politicians have also been quick to condemn the cuts.

Representatives from the government accused trade unions of scaremongering and said that the government was committed to protecting NHS services and staff; the NHS has been running beyond its means for many years and as a result, trusts are in debt and these debts must be recovered by making savings and promoting systems that will cut waste and make the NHS more efficient. The government said that they are taking money out of bureaucratic departments in order to focus on patient care.
