NHS introduce new charges for orthodontic treatment

The NHS in Northern Ireland is planning to introduce charges for orthodontic treatment, according to the Belfast Telegraph.

The change, which will result in thousands of patients having to pay for their own dental care, has been branded a “tax on children’s smiles” by Alex Easton, a member of the Stormont Health Committee. Under the new guidelines, almost all cases will have to be paid for privately as the criteria for free NHS treatment will be extremely strict. Mr Easton said he was deeply concerned about the new measures, which will inevitably prevent many children from having treatment that they need because their parents can’t afford it.

Orthodontic treatments are amongst the most expensive dental treatments, with traditional braces costing in excess of £2000; it is feared that many parents simply will not be able to afford treatment for their children. Two thousand pounds in a lot of money, especially in this day and age, when people are struggling to live on restricted family budgets.

The British Dental Association has also voiced its concern, saying that changes in NHS funding will have a huge impact on families that want to provide their children with the best possible dental and healthcare; now, parents will be worried about their finances, as well as their children’s health. Belfast orthodontist, James Lundy, has called for time to be given for orthodontists, patients and practices to get used to the new NHS guidelines.

The new system will echo those that are currently in place in England and Wales, where patients have to pay for orthodontic treatment. The new measure will save the NHS in Northern Ireland millions of pounds and will help to cut the deficit; however, patients and parents will be angered by the changes and they may face severe difficulties affording treatment for their children. The new guidelines are expected to come into play over the course of the next two months.
