New Zealand’s New Teeth Whitening Rules

Sample News Big

Health officials in New Zealand have recently developed new guidelines for teeth whitening treatments. The new restrictions enforce a rule that states teeth whitening treatments that contain more than 7% hydrogen peroxide, can only be issued by dental practitioners. This new rule will be set firmly in place from the 30th of June.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) have stated that whitening products containing between 7-12% hydrogen peroxide may only be administered by dental practitioners. This form of product can also be issued by a registered oral health practitioner and is set in place to deter non-practitioners from issuing illegal treatments.

These new guidelines will also come with a series of safety warnings stating that teeth whitening is unsuitable for those under 16 and if irritation occurs to immediately cease treatment. The guidelines have been set into place when a number of concerns were raised about the New Zealand Dental Council and the Ministry of Health.

Any teeth whitening product containing more than 12% hydrogen peroxide can only be issued by a dental practitioner or an oral health practitioner, under the supervision of a qualified dentist.
