New study reveals brushing alone cannot prevent enamel erosion

A new study has revealed that brushing alone cannot prevent enamel erosion.

Researchers trialled nine fluoridated toothpastes, which are available to buy in Europe, as part of an investigation into enamel loss. After analysing the different types of toothpaste, the research team, which was made up of Brazilian and Swiss scientists, concluded that using toothpaste to clean the teeth regularly was not sufficient to eliminate the risk of enamel erosion. The team suggested that brushing must be combined with frequent dental visits and healthy lifestyle choices to protect the enamel.

The toothpaste brands analysed by the researchers included Sensodyne, Colgate, Blend-a-Med, Candida and Elmex. Professor Ana Cecilia Correa Aranha, from the University of Sao Paolo claimed that some brands performed better than others, but insisted that none were capable of preventing enamel erosion. Study author, Dr Samira Helena Joao-Souza, also from the University of Sao Paolo, explained that enamel wear is linked to multiple factors, including diet, and this is why brushing alone is not enough to protect the teeth.

The researchers found that Sensodyne’s Repair and Protect ranked highest, followed by Colgate’s Caries Protection toothpaste. The enamel surface loss after five brushes was 0.0017mm and 0.0022mm respectively. The worst ranking toothpaste was Blend-a-Med’s Pro Expert toothpaste, with approximate enamel surface loss of 0.004mm.
