A new study has suggested that beating bad breath can significantly improve your happiness.

Research published in the International Journal of Dental Hygiene suggests that bad breath can take its toll on happiness. Researchers found that people who suffered from halitosis were twice as unhappy as those who didn’t. The team posed participants a series of questions and deduced that people with bad breath went through 500 percent more negative experiences than those who don’t suffer from the ailment.

Interviews revealed that many people said that bad breath had a negative impact on their self-esteem and confidence levels.

The findings of the study point to the notion that tackling bad breath could improve happiness levels. In response, the Oral Health Foundation, has encouraged people who are worried about halitosis to seek advice from their dentist. Dr Nigel Carter OBE, chief executive of the charity, explained that there are some very simple ways of combating bad breath, including adopting a good oral hygiene routine and seeing a dentist on a regular basis. Dental hygiene appointments are also highly recommended. Dr Carter said that the study was interesting, as it focuses on the link between bad breath and dental health and psychological wellbeing.
