New Smartbrush Claims To Boost Oral Hygiene

A new toothbrush, which is connected to the Internet, has been launched with the promise of boosting oral hygiene and keeping gum disease and cavities at bay.

The Kolibree brush, which was designed in Paris, costs $99 and promises to improve oral hygiene by informing the user whether they have covered the entire mouth and providing them with information about the duration of brushing. The brush tracks brushing habits and enables users to see how well they have brushed and check that they have covered the corners of the mouth, which are traditionally difficult to reach with a toothbrush.

The brush will feature at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas this week, along with other innovations, which are set to take the world by storm in 2014.

Kolibree is not the first smart brush on the market, but it does offer a high-tech alternative to the conventional electric toothbrush. By enabling users to see how long they have brushed for, this ensures that dental patients brush for the recommended two minutes per day and encourages them to brush thoroughly on a daily basis.

Oral hygiene is the most effective means of lowering the risk of gum disease and decay, both of which are very common. Poor oral health has been linked to poor general health by a host of research studies and it is believed that reducing the risk of gum disease can also lower the risk of heart disease, diabetes and strokes.
