New Simplyhealth survey reveals the most bizarre questions posed by dental patients

A new survey conducted by Simplyhealth has revealed the most bizarre questions received by dentists in the UK.

As part of a national poll, the firm, which supplies Denplan dental cover, asked dentists about common questions they have been asked by clients. Most patients have queries about oral hygiene and want to know about the best toothbrushes and brands of toothpaste, but some had questions that were slightly more unexpected.

Examples of responses given by dentists participating in the survey included, ‘Is it better to use a crisp packet instead of floss?’, ‘What is floss and can I eat it?’, ‘Why must I brush my teeth if my dog doesn’t need to?’ and ‘Will my filling melt if I drink hot soup?’

Research carried out by the firm also revealed that there has been a significant increase in Google searches linked to obscure dental-themed questions. Queries about how to clean the teeth with baking powder and how to create a DIY filling rocketed by 140 percent last year. DIY extraction was also a subject of great intrigue for Google users, with the number of searches in 2017 up by 70 percent compared on figures for 2016.

The survey was conducted to gain an insight into the questions most commonly asked by patients and to better understand the kinds of conversations dentists have with their patients.
