Plans for a brand new Sainsbury’s superstore in Colchester have been unveiled.

The new store will be the supermarket giant’s third shop in the town and the latest addition boasts a multi-million pound design. The store will open on the site currently occupied by B&Q on the Hythe.

In addition to groceries, clothing and electrics, the store will also house a state of the art health centre, which will offer a range of services, including dental and hearing care and an optician’s. There are plans for the health clinic to be run by private firm, MEE Healthcare.

The store will create 450 new jobs and there will be parking facilities for more than 500 cars. The proposed opening hours are between 7am and 11pm.

Plans for the new development have been made available to local businesses and the public and will now be submitted to Colchester Council for approval. A decision on the application is expected in the summer.

Supermarket dental centres and health services have become increasingly popular and many stores across the UK now offer access to health care in-store. Supermarket dental clinics often provide extended opening hours and enable shoppers to combine doing their weekly shop with having a routine check-up.
