Andrew Lansley, Secretary of State for Health, has stressed that new NHS dental pilots will promote preventative dentistry.

Speaking during Health Questions at the House of Commons yesterday, Mr Lansley said that the government was aiming to increase the overall number of patient registrations, improve access for children and promote preventative dental treatments.

Mr Lansley also told MPs that there was strong support for reforms to the dental system; he quoted John Milne, chair of the General Practice Committee, saying that the pilots were focused on improving quality and focusing on the provision of excellent patient care. Mr Milne was also keen to stress the importance of the relationship between dentists and patients, a point with which Mr Lansley concurred.

Mr Lansley also answered questions about the proposal to shift responsibility for dental commissioning from primary care trusts to a National Commissioning Board; Lansley said that the changes would improve consistency.
