A new NHS dental surgery will open in Hanley, Staffordshire, it has been announced.

The new surgery will open in a former windscreen repair garage on Leek Road, Hanley and will be managed by Dr Arsalan Shamsi on the condition that planning is approved. Dr Shamsi already runs a dental practice in Biddulph and won the tender to let the new premises from Stoke on Trent Primary Care Trust.

Provided that the plans are approved, the new surgery will open in January next year; the practice will cater for around seven thousand NHS patients in local communities including Hanley East, Berry Hill, Bentilee and Abbey Hulton.

Stoke on Trent has a high rate of tooth decay and other dental health problems are also prevalent; the Primary Care Trust is investing large amounts of money to tackle the problems and improve access to NHS care in the area. The new surgery will help to provide NHS care for local residents and improve current services in the area.

Dr Shamsi said he was looking forward to working in the Hanley East area; he said there was a considerable gap between affluent and poor areas in the region and claimed that the new surgery would help to address this problem. Currently, standards of oral health in the area are low and dentists are working alongside representatives from the Primary Care Trust to try and improve services and raise awareness of oral health amongst local people.

The property will be converted into three treatment suites, patient assessment rooms and office and educational space. The property has been empty for the last six months.
