A free dental clinic has attracted hundreds of patients in New Mexico.

The New Mexico Mission of Mercy is hosting a two day free dental event, which started at 5am today and will finish late tomorrow. Some patients have been queuing for appointments since Tuesday, as the slots will be allocated on a first come, first served basis.

The two day clinic will involve around 200 volunteer dental professionals and thousands of patients are expected to benefit from the event. One of the first patients in the queue was Carla Schumacher, a cancer survivor who has suffered a large amount of bone loss as a result of her illness; she claimed she would wait for days if necessary to get an appointment because she cannot afford treatment at a normal clinic.

The volunteer dental team will provide routine treatments including cleaning treatments, fillings, extractions and root canal treatment. Mission of Mercy clinics operate all over America and are aiming to treat as many people as possible; unfortunately the demand for free care is much higher than the supply, hence the enormous queues outside the New Mexico clinic.

Dentist Lubar, one of the 200-strong team of dentists, said the Mission of Mercy clinic was a great way to give something back to the community and help those in desperate need of treatment. In recent years, free clinics have become increasingly popular as a result of the recession and people losing their jobs and insurance benefits. Free clinics often attract hundreds of patients, highlighting the problem of affordable dental care in America.
