Health officials have announced that new funding will be made available to reduce waiting times for dental care in the Northern suburbs of Victoria.

Doreen Power, chief executive of Plenty Valley Community Health, said that there was currently a wait of 28 months for general dental treatment, but officials are hoping to reduce this to 12 months by the year 2015.

Plenty Valley Community Health, which provides dental care for approximately 15,000 patients in the area, is prioritising children who are waiting for treatment.

The service is expanding its current services in Whittlesea and Epping, with new plans to work with private dentists using a voucher system.

Ms Power said that Dental Health Services Victoria will coordinate the provision of additional dental care and the service will work alongside Plenty Valley Community Health and private dentists.

Plenty Valley Community Health will run two evening sessions at its Epping clinic. The services at clinics in Whittlesea will also be expanded and the service is currently recruiting extra members of staff.
