New dental providers ready to take on the challenge of clearing backlogs in Colwyn Bay

Dentists in Colwyn Bay are ready and raring to go as they attempt to clear treatment backlogs.

Dr Mostafa Hassaan took over Eirlys Dental Practice in February after the existing provider gave notice that it would be terminating its NHS contract in November.

Dr Hassaan stepped in, giving hope to 15,000 patients who attended the Colwyn Bay practice and a sister surgery in Caernarfon.

After hearing about the situation, Dr Hassaan decided to take on the contract, providing NHS treatment for patients from both practices.

The initial excitement was dented slightly when the scale of the task became visible to Dr Hassaan, who discovered that the premises needing updating and upgrading to make them Covid-secure, but he is determined to get dental services back on track.

Dr Hassaan has invested more than £13,000 in a new ventilation system, which will reduce time between patients and enable the practice team to carry out aerosol-generating procedures.

The team has been working on clearing treatment backlogs since April and is ready to step up in the weeks and months ahead, with a vast list of patients to get through.

Dentists have already carried out 5,000 treatment courses, but there are hundreds of patients waiting and many may need complex treatment. Of the patients already treated, around 70% were classed as red or amber, which means they present serious risks.

News of the new provider has been welcomed by local residents and members of North Wales Dental Services.
