New dental clinic set to open in East Southland

Work is under way on a new dental clinic in East Southland, New Zealand.

The new clinic will be attached to the Gore Hospital and will provide a unique blend of private and public dental healthcare. The new clinic, which will be run by Southern District Health Board in conjunction with Gore Health LTD, will have two public dental chairs and one private chair.

The new venture will help people in the area to access affordable dental care; currently, there is a shortage of dentists in the area and some local residents are travelling long distances to see a dentist. The new clinic is being constructed on the Gore Hospital site and will cost around half the sum of a brand new independent development; representatives from the health board and the hospital say the clinic is a win-win situation because building costs have been kept to a minimum and patients now have a choice between private and public dental care.

It is hoped that the clinic will be able to start taking new patients in November this year. The health board is also investing a large amount of money in other projects in the region; new chairs are being opened Winton, Wakatipu and Balclutha and work is also being done to upgrade existing services in Riverton and Lumsden.
