New dental clinic opens at Bangalore heart hospital

A new dental clinic has opened at the Jayadeva Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences and Research in Bangalore.

Heart patients can now receive dental care, as well as medical treatment for heart conditions, at the hospital. Director of the institute, Dr C N Manjunath, said that the opening of the dental facility was a logical step forward, as it is essential for heart patients to receive regular dental check-ups; he said that heart patients are strongly advised to adopt a good oral hygiene routine, as the bacteria that is associated with gum disease and oral health issues can get into the bloodstream, which may cause damage to the heart valves and increases the risks of clots forming; this consequently increases the risk of heart attacks and strokes.

Numerous research studies, carried out in institutions across the world have now confirmed a link between poor oral health and an increased risk of heart disease. Dr Manjunath said that the new facility would enable patients with oral health and heart problems to be treated as quickly as possible; in the past, doctors had to refer patients to other dental clinics but now they can be treated faster and under the same roof. The dental clinic was set up by the Oxford Dental Institute.
