A new dental centre, which will provide care for children from low income families, is set to open in Berlin, Worcester County.

The Worcester County Dental Center on William Street, will cater for patients under the age of 18 who do not have dental insurance and children from low income families. The clinic is set to open on the 15th March. Children who are involved in the Maryland Health Smiles programme will also be invited to attend the clinic.

Plans for the dental centre were first revealed three years ago after health officials decided to move the senior centre to a different location; the dental centre will now open in the old senior centre. The building has been gutted and renovated over the course of the last year and is now kitted out with all the latest equipment and technology. The senior centre has moved to Old Ocean City Boulevard.

Andrea Mathias, Worcester County Deputy Health Officer, said that staff were keen to inform parents and guardians about the services on offer at the new dental clinic. Initially the clinic will employ a dentist three days a week and a dental hygienist four days a week; opening hours may be expanded in the future if the demand is high. Dental treatments will be provided on a sliding fee scale, meaning that patients will pay what they can afford for treatment. Mathias said that local people have already been asking about getting appointments for their children at the clinic.
