New dental app helps disabled children

Sample News Big

A new app has been developed to make going to the dentist less stressful for disabled children.

Avril Webster, who has a disabled son, developed the app to help children in a similar situation to her son Stephen, who has a severe intellectual disability. Going to the dentist is a stressful, sometimes daunting experience for most people and it can be a huge challenge for disabled children.

The app, which is called ‘Going to the dentist’, is based on a popular children’s book of the same name; the app helps to prepare children for their visit to the dentist and put their mind at ease. The app shows the stages of going to the dentist and explains what happens during the visit to the dentist. The app is not a story; instead, it uses an easy to follow 12 step picture sequence, which is complemented by practical, simple language. Avril has also added sounds to enable children to get used to the noises often heard in the dental practice.

Avril incorporated that sound zone because Stephen became anxious when he heard sounds and noises in the dental surgery; now, with the help of the new ‘Going to the dentist’ app, he is used to the noises and can cope with them when he hears them at the surgery.
