The Quebec Order of Dentists has launched a campaign to raise awareness of the importance of oral health; the campaign will target senior citizens.

The aim of the campaign is to encourage older people to take care of their teeth and gums; oral health is important in itself but numerous studies have now linked poor oral health to a host of serious illnesses, including heart disease and strokes. Dr Diane Legault, president of the dental Order, said that standards of oral health have improved in Quebec over the last thirty years; however, dentists were concerned that seniors were not seeing their dentist as often as they should.

Legault said that dental health was not a priority for older people at the moment and she hopes that the campaign will help to change this; the campaign will be accompanied by the slogan, ‘An attractive smile is ageless’ and will focus on issues that are common amongst older people, such a dry mouth.

Dental appointments are very important for people of all ages, but regular dental check-ups are especially important for older people, as dentists can spot the signs of a range of different health conditions and this means that treatment can be administered quickly.
