Multi-million pound dental academy on course for September opening

Construction of the new nine million pound University of Portsmouth dental academy is going well and the school is set to open its doors to students in September.

The academy will provide some of the best training and education facilities in the country and will also provide unrivalled professional practice, as students will learn alongside qualified staff; this is the first programme of its kind in the UK. Dental students will couple their academic studies with on the job training, which will be overseen by qualified dentists, hygienists and dental nurses.

The academy is being funded by the NHS and is an exciting venture for the University of Portsmouth, which has joined forces with Kings’ College London Dental Institute to bring outstanding levels of dental education to the South coast.

Amazingly, the construction programme has remained on target, despite the dreadful weather over the winter months, which saw most of the UK battered with snow and gale force winds. The building is particularly tricky because of the large quantity of high-tech equipment and instruments, according to Tony Horne, the project director.

In addition to providing the students with state of the art facilities, the students will now be able to help local people as the current system of charging patients for dental treatments as part of the university’s William Beatty Dental Service will now be replaced by a free service that will be offered to certain patients in the area; the services will be provided by final year students at Kings’ College London and student therapists from the University of Portsmouth, who will be supervised by staff dentists.
