A mother from Henrico County has spoken of her anger and anguish following the death of her son earlier this week.

Crystal Lewis had brought her son to the Virginia Commonwealth University Dental Faculty Practice on Tuesday for a procedure to fit caps onto his teeth. Jacobi Hill, who was six years old, went into cardiac arrest following the procedure and died shortly after.

Since her son’s death, Ms Lewis said she has received very little information and support from the staff involved in the incident and is struggling to come to terms with the tragedy because she doesn’t understand why it happened.

Jacobi Hill suffered from asthma but was passed fit to have the operation following an examination by a paediatrician on Monday. Jacobi had no other health problems.

Staff at the dental centre in Richmond called an ambulance, which arrived at the scene some six minutes later. According to Ms Lewis, Jacobi was pronounced dead on arrival, but this has not been confirmed by hospital officials. A spokeswoman from the hospital said the case was now being investigated. An autopsy is due to be carried out later today to determine the cause of death.
