Most People Worry Bad Teeth Could Stop Them From Getting a Job
A new survey has revealed most people worry that an unattractive smile could prevent them from getting a job. The survey, which was carried out by You Gov on behalf of the British Dental Association, suggested that almost 80 percent of people felt that bad teeth could affect their chances of getting a job in a negative way.
77 percent of participants said that poor oral health could hinder their chances of employment, while 38 percent said the same thing about being overweight.
Chair of the General Dental Practice Committee at the British Dental Association, Henrik Overgaard-Nielsen, said the jobs market is increasingly competitive and this means that bad teeth can have a serious impact on employment opportunities. Surveys in the past have shown that employers are more likely to offer a job to somebody with healthy teeth than a candidate with an unattractive smile. The survey suggests that an attractive smile is not just about looking good, it’s also about working towards goals and trying to progress in both your social and professional life.
Mr Overgaard-Nielsen was speaking shortly after the launch of the All-Party Parliamentary Group for Dentistry and Oral Health, which aims to tackle alarming rates of decay among children in the UK. He suggested that the government has spent far too long ignoring oral health and warned that urgent action is required to improve standards among children and level out the inequalities that exist between affluent and deprived areas.
