Monmouthshire Dentist Uses Olympic Inspiration to Raise £1,700 for Charity

A dentist from Monmouthshire has used inspiration from the Rio Olympic Games to raise £1,700 for charity.

Dr Nigel Jones was inspired to take part in a charity cycle ride after watching Welsh heroine Becky James in action. Dr Jones, an implantologist from Abergavenny, successfully negotiated the 100-mile Prudential Ride London-Surrey, which took him from the Olympic Park to The Mall in Central London via parts of rural Surrey.

Dr Jones said that watching Becky compete in Rio gave him the inspiration to take on his own cycling challenge. He also has a couple of friends who have taken up the sport recently. He wanted to do something to raise money for a good cause, and he was looking for something to occupy the little time he has away from dentistry.

Dr Jones will split the money he raises, with the total currently standing at £1,700, between the Alzheimer’s Society and the Salvation Army. The challenge was particularly poignant because Dr Jones lost both his mother and mother-in-law to Alzheimer’s.

Dr Jones spent around three months training for the event, and he said that it was tough, but hugely rewarding. He also thanked everyone who has donated to the causes.
