A new mobile dental service has been launched in Waikato, New Zealand.

The new van hit the roads this week and the first stop was Te Rapa School. The van is the first of nine to be launched in the area as part of the District Health Board’s investment in oral health services for children. Six new fixed clinics will also be built to improve access to dental services in Waikato; the clinics will be built at schools across the area.

School Dental Service Manager, Diane Pevreal, said the new units would make a huge difference to children in the area. The mobile units are easy to pack, have plenty of space and provide a more exciting experience for children. The District Health Board is focusing on preventative care and the mobile vans are equipped to provide children with preventative treatments, including sealant and fluoride treatments, cleaning treatments and a range of routine general dental treatments.

The new van will serve schools in the Hamilton area, which are not attached to a fixed dental clinic. Dentists and health officials are hoping that the mobile units will help to make dental care more accessible and also promote good oral health in the community. Diane Pevreal said she is hoping to see more parents attending appointments with their children; the units have plenty of space for parents to accompany their children and this will parents to get involved in their child’s oral health and learn about oral hygiene and healthy eating.
